On Sunday evening, Air Berlin officially launched its new route between Berlin and Abu Dhabi. The airline now operates four non-stop flights per week between the two cities on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays. The launch also marks the start of a codeshare agreement between Air Berlin and Etihad Airways, initially covering selected flights in the network of both airlines.
The aircraft operating the new route is an Airbus A330-200 with Business and Economy Class. Business Class passengers traveling between Berlin and Abu Dhabi get the added benefit of a door-to-door limousine service, which they can book via a dedicated hotline up to 24 hours before departure. Passengers within 40km of Berlin-Tegel airport are picked up from home and transported in a chauffeur-driven car to the airport. Once they arrive in Abu Dhabi, they have the option to be driven to any destination within the United Arab Emirates.
The exclusive limousine service is also available for Business Class passengers on the return journey. They can be collected from anywhere in the United Arab Emirates, and upon arrival in Berlin, they are met at arrivals and chauffeured to anywhere within the city and surrounding areas.
This luxury airport transfer service is available to Business Class passengers on codeshare connections with Etihad Airways from Germany to Abu Dhabi. At Frankfurt and Munich the limo service is available within 40 km of the airport, and from Dusseldorf within 60 km of the airport.
Hartmut Mehdorn, CEO airberlin, who was on the inaugural flight to Abu Dhabi, commented:
“This strategic partnership with Etihad Airways not only opens up unique opportunities for the future for airberlin, it also brings a number of benefits for our passengers in terms of access to new routes, including our new all-year-round direct connection to Abu Dhabi. This flight is integrated into Etihad’s hub system in Abu Dhabi, so we are in a position to offer excellent connections, for example to Asia and Australia. Passengers coming from Abu Dhabi will have access to the numerous connecting flights operated by airberlin, both to destinations in Germany and also to Austria, Scandinavia and Switzerland. This makes the flight attractive for business travellers and holidaymakers alike.”
Etihad Airways President and Chief Executive Officer, James Hogan said: “This flight marks a key milestone in our new partnership with airberlin. We are delighted, through this partnership, to link the capital cities of Germany – a hugely important market for Etihad Airways – and the United Arab Emirates. We are looking forward to strengthening our ties with airberlin as we work closely over the coming months to explore opportunities to bring the benefits of our partnership to our customers.”
