Things to do in Tobago
Located just north of Venezuela is the two-island country of Trinidad & Tobago. The smaller of the two, Tobago, is a vision of tropical luxury. It’s quieter and less developed than its island neighbor, meaning its rainforests, reefs, and beaches provide an unpretentious playground for adventurers. People come from around the world to experience the island’s renowned bird watching, first-class diving, waterfall swimming, and buzzing nightlife. After landing from business class flights to Tobago, don’t miss out on the following island activities.
Located on an old cocoa estate, the Argyle Waterfall is Tobago’s tallest waterfall, tumbling 175 feet over a series of cascades. To explore the area, you must sign up for an official tour. Packages include bird watching along with the nature walk. As you hike to the falls, you’ll pass through stands of cocoa trees and a variety of tropical species, including butterflies, spiders, lizards, and snakes. Once you reach Argyle Waterfall, your tour guide will lead you through the bottom three cascades of the falls.
Whether or not you’re a fan of chocolate, the Tobago Cocoa Estate is worth visiting. The plantation is located in the Tobago Main Ridge Forest Reserve, the oldest legally protected forest reserve with a conservation purpose. On a guided tour, you’ll learn about the history of cocoa in Tobago and try your hand at the fermentation and drying process. At the end of the tour, you’ll be served a traditional Tobago-inspired dinner followed by a rum and chocolate tasting. Don’t forget to purchase some artisan chocolate to bring home.

Tobago enjoys a tropical climate with ample sunshine. The average temperature is 83 degrees Fahrenheit year-round. Thanks to the northeast trade winds, Tobago receives a cooling wind that moderates the heat. The island’s two seasons are the dry season, between December and May, and the wet season (also hurricane season), between June and November. However, Tobago is located outside of the main hurricane belt, and therefore does not receive as many storms as the northerly islands. The dry season is a slightly more popular time to visit the island, but you can find better rates during the wet season.
