Things to do in Sint Maarten
Sint Maarten occupies one-half of a two-nation island. The northern part, Saint Martin, is owned by the French, while the southern half, Sint Maarten, is owned by the Dutch. It is the smallest inhabited sea island, split between two nations, in the world. The inner part of the island is a mix of rolling hills and lush tropical forests, surrounded by white sand beaches. English is widely spoken throughout and the US dollar is universally accepted on the island, making it a popular tourist destination. Only a four-hour flight from New York City and two-hour flight from Miami, the Dutch side capital, Phillipsburg, has gained a reputation as the shopping capital of the Eastern Caribbean. With over 30 beaches, 13 casinos, and 400 restaurants, the island’s small stature is packed with exciting activities. Don’t miss out on one of the following attractions after business class flights to Sint Maarten.
For the best views in Sint Maarten, visit one of the island’s most famous historic monuments, Fort Louis. Built in 1767 upon orders from governor Jean Sebastian de Durat, the fort’s purpose was to defend the city of Marigot, specifically the harbor warehouses. Throughout history, Fort Louis has been abandoned and restored several times, with its most recent renovation thanks to the Hope Estate archeological association. From the highest point of the fort, you’ll be treated to uninterrupted views of Marigot, Simpson Bay, Anguilla, the Lowlands, and Nettle Bay.
The Butterfly Farm was built in 1994 by two eccentric English men, William Slayter and John Coward. William leads the tours around the ground, entertaining guests with his quirky sense of humor. The Butterfly Farm is filled with hundreds of species of exotic butterflies from all around the world. A couple fan favorites include the iridescent Blue Morpho butterfly from the rainforests of South America and the giant Atlas Moth from Southeast Asia. Throughout your tour, you can hold the butterflies and caterpillars with the assistance of your tour guide.
The largest zoo in the Caribbean, the St. Maarten Zoological Park, is home to over 500 species of animals, 80 of which are native to the Caribbean or Amazon rainforest. Instead of cages or bars, natural boundaries separate animals from humans, such as moats and gardens. As you explore, you’ll walk through a Squirrel Monkey Island, botanic gardens, caiman marsh, boulder-strewn savannah, and more. The grounds also include the largest playground on Sint Maarten. Birds fly freely around the zoo, so make sure to pick up food at the entrance and find a handful of new parrot friends.
